School, the martial arts and cross training

Cross Training in the Martial Arts is a must.  No one style will have all the answers to the multitude of situations you could encounter in self-defense scenarios or competition.   One must take the approach of going to high school and taking classes.  What do I mean?  There is no one class to cover all subject matters, but rather a vast array of classes specializing in single disciplines…..English, math, chemistry and so forth.  These classes combine to give one a well-rounded education.  From this well-rounded education, one may choose to specialize in one area over another, but knowledge and basic understanding of the other subjects is there. But……..at the start of our school years classes are usually combined in a General Studies curriculum to help us understand the system, develop the base we need and the general knowledge to insure our future scholastic success. 

                How can the basic structure of our school system help us in our quest to become a complete Martial artist?  The beginning of any Martial Arts Program must have a set of Fundamentals, a core of techniques and movements that will set the building blocks of all future skills.  How do I stand?  Where do my hands go?  How do I fall properly? These are just a few examples of Fundamental teachings, and while the styles may vary in their Fundamentals, at the core they are much the same.  The Fundamentals are like going through Elementary school and you don’t want to stay there forever.  You need to move on.

                Welcome to Middle School and High School! You have your Fundamentals set (General Studies), now you can get a greater understanding of different styles and what they hold.  The goal here is to get a basic understanding of them all and you will start to find your chosen field.  In the Martial Arts you could find yourself more attuned to a grappling art such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo or Submission Wrestling.  You may also find you prefer the Striking Arts such as Muay Thai, Boxing or Karate.  Now is the time to specialize.  Find your passion and strive to truly understand your style of choice. 

                But……here’s college.  You’ve chose you Major – Jiu-Jitsu or karate or (insert any martial art here). In college you still touch on the other disciplines.  If I’m a math major I still have to take some English, sociology, etc…..  Why?  Each of these other fields will help you better understand your own.  In the Martial Arts if I am a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu “Major” my understanding of Karate, Judo, Muay Thai and any other style will only enhance and ultimately improve my Jiu-Jitsu.  Yay! I graduate college!

                Wait this is where we as Martial Artists must part ways with our education model.  We don’t leave college, we go on to get our Masters, our Doctorate, and we never leave!!!! Our goal as Martial Artists is to accept and embrace the fact – WE MUST CONTINUE TO LEARN!!!   Don’t fret though; it’s the learning that makes it all worthwhile.  It’s a unique opportunity, not only do we study our chosen discipline forever, we can take a few step back and add a new Major to our studies!  I’m a major in Judo, now I’m going back to college and I’m going to major in Muay Thai.  Better yet I’ll do a dual major Muay Thai and Kali!  Do you get where I am going?

                The Martial Arts are an incredible journey, meant to open minds, develop ourselves mentally and physically, and ultimately bring us closer to our own humanity.  The Martial Arts are not to develop clicks and rivalries between the styles.  Every action requires energy; do not waste yours on the meaningless.  Rather focus it and see how many Majors you can Master!  Remember school is in session!
